I’ve had a wood burner for years and years – and I’ve never had/been told I need a cap to keep birds out! From personal experience, birds don’t tend to go in in winter when it’s on, and we always get it swept in late summer to make sure it’s clear – but never had birds in there! If it was mine I would live with it a few years and see if you actually need one.
