  • Tanking around a bath and shower area

I’m currently doing a bathroom renovation and asked my builder about tanking the area around the shower over bath.

He said he has done it with a transparent paint. When I asked him to see the product, he said he took home and will bring it tomorrow. I can’t help but to feel a bit suspicious.

Is there such a thing as a clear waterproof paint? I also can’t feel any difference in texture compared to the plasterboard in the opposite wall.

He’s half way through tiling so time is running! Thank you

Nope. No, no, no, no, no! Get a different plumber, this one will probably leave you with problems. We’ll, that’s what my gut and experience tells me.

My tanking liquid was blue. Very thick and you had to throw the brush after. There are see through sealing fluids for rescuing things later but not used them. You’d see it and feel it if it was tanked.

He’s straight up lying. Call his bluff or you’ll pay for it down the line.

Has he used tile backer boards that are waterproof? I don’t believe these need tanking but I think there was a thin primer or something we used that was painted over the boards. What is he tiling onto?

The mapei stuff is blue I think but apparently there’s one called silka or something that looks pretty much like pva, but you can normally see when you’ve pva’d fresh plaster etc

It may not need tanking depending on the plaster board etc he has used. I would ask him to explain what he has done… before he does anymore!!!
