Well another busy week here. I’ve just had solar + battery + EV charger installed.

I previously had solar on my last house when things were a bit more straightforward and the gov paid you to generate electricity.

As the cost of panels are very cheap now (compared to scaffold costs etc) I decided to go with 24 panels and have an east/west split which doesn’t get a sunny as north facing but does get sun for longer period of the day.

I’ve got 10.9kW solar with 8kW inverter and 8kWh battery in my detached garage and integrated EV charger. I also opted to get the gateway that means I have whole house “off grid” back up with zero switch over (seamless) which is really useful as I get 30 odd power cuts a year and I work from home so that can be quite disruptive.

My new EV has been delayed until the end of the month so I will have to wait to try the new charger out.

The whole system inc install cost £13k and has a payback period of just under 8 years.

I did a lot of research before choosing the system and installer so I’m happy to answer questions if anyone is thinking about solar in the future.

Oh me I have questions as we are considering, are you getting any rate selling back electricity to the grid?

£13k feels a great price for 24 panels.

Does or will this also heat the hot water?

Is your installer local or national? We are in north east Scotland. How big is the unit in the loft?

I’m with Eon Next Drive (it’s available if you have an EV or battery storage) – I get charged 7p 00:00 to 07:00 and 25p during the day for any electricity I import (so in winter I’ll charge battery and/or EV overnight on cheap rate) and I get paid 16.5p for export. So I can charge battery for 7p and immediately discharge it at 16.5p a couple of times a night if I wanted to maximise “profit”.

I considered a heat pump for heating/hot water when I replaced boiler last year but my house isn’t that well insulated so all gas boiler for that. But this system does allow for future integration for water heating.

It was a local ish installed based in Leyland. Top blokes.

The gateway in the loft is about 18″x24″.

The battery and inverter in the garage are IP rated so they can actually go outside (as they have a little heater in them to stop them freezing in winter).

It’s a very clever system that uses AI to predict behaviour and does it all without much faff.

wonderful thanks for the info. I’ve seen that a lot of energy companies are offering solar but it felt like you mignt be locked in to them forever to get the good sell back rate of energy. So it’s great to get your take

Amazing story thank you for sharing. Wish we could have done the same but have large protected trees on both sides.

Great little tips. I’d like to identify a system that works with limited day/sunlight and doesn’t require using the roof.

How much was the total system and who did you go with in the end?
