Good idea to get an interior designer, architect and landscaper
Posted by Sally Jones on January 31, 2025 at 6:18 pmWe’re almost at the stage now of hiring an architect for a downstairs extension (exciting!). I’ve heard it’s a really good idea to get an interior designer, architect and landscaper working together right from the start – have others done this? And do firms exist that have all of them under one roof? And am I looking at a whopping bill (I’m in SW London)

I haven’t done this, however if your budget stretches to allow this then go for it. We are about to embark on our second renovation (loft conversion and single story extension)
I’ve known architects and builders under one company, even interior designers. Not landscaping though, you could just draft up what you want to do. Then see how your works would impact that.
I know we want to run water to our log cabin, so have to be mindful that we run pipes from the house to the cabin before anything is built and makes access impossible.

Yes we always advise having initial unifying conversations with the interiors designer or interior architect, architect and garden designer. A landscaper is akin to a builder. You can then make sure everyone is on the same page and some essential construction elements that affect each of these areas are covered such as levels for internal floor and patio, views and unified materials.

In my experience, architects can recommend builders and landscapers that they’ve worked with successfully before. IMO, it’s not hard to get along when everything is going well – what you really want is a team of people who can work stuff out when things go wrong and it takes time to build up that trust and experience. And yes, it’s definitely more expensive as you’ll be paying 3 lots of fees, but worth it, as they are all trained in different skills!

Most architects have their go to designers who will have their go to landscapers!
It’s usually best to ask your architect first, and then going forward and for peace of mind, gather a team who have worked together before, or certainly 2 out of 3
Good luck!

There’s a company near me (SE London) who do the whole lot and seem to be very well respected – but expensive !

I’m an Interior Designer working in SW London with nearly 20yrs experience.
I can honestly say that if you get a good ID, they save you money, save you time (by making sure the project runs on time and on budget) and save you the headache of managing diff trades
It shouldn’t cost the earth, if you know who and where to go to.
I’d be happy to have a chat if you want
