Hello all! Having a bit of a nightmare with a new extension and external glass doors not having trickle vents installed.

Have been advised we’ll need a continuous extraction system in order for building control to sign off on the project – but not sure what this will look like?! Will it be like having a bathroom extractor fan in our room?

Any experience if this/advice gratefully received!

We went the whole hog and installed an mvhr system which is a massive faff but fabulous. It recovers the heat from your indoor rooms and brings fresh air from outside which it warms up using that heat.

We have done the same. We have a PIV to install. Sent the tech spec on it to Building Control to get their agreement which they approved. No idea if it’s going to be totally effective but the hope is that it’ll get rid of condensation on the old original windows in bedrooms, as well as push clean air into the rest of the house too. Cost about £700 I think so not a huge expense. Much more expensive than just sticking a continuous fan through a wall though – that would be the cheapest and simplest thing to do and with modern fans being so quiet and cheap to run I think it’s a perfectly valid solution tbh.

We are in the middle of a deep retrofit… Have fitted an Inventer decentralised mvhr from ecological building systems. Cost about 7k for a 5 bed house…. But we need to aim for less than 3 ACH for it to be effective for the heat recovery, although other benefits from air quality etc will obviously be felt before then. I think if you can’t get your house airtight, it’s not worth the money but you would need to take advice…. We won’t know how airtight we can go until the end of the phased retrofit. So it’s a bit chicken and egg…..

Listen and learn from the house planning help podcast…I found it very helpful!!

We are a self build so used http://www.bpcventilation.com who did the plan and supplied and we installed it. Works best with good detailing to airtightness and increased insulation so make sure that factors in your build. No point paying £1000’s to be sucking in cold air through gaps.
