  • Extend our small recessed front porch

Thanks as always for the fabulous advice, ideas and support that is offered in this group.

We are finishing up the first phase of our internal renovation, where we’ve refurbished the top two floors (due to budget constraints). We are now hoping to tackle the ground floor.

One thing I’ve not yet decided is whether we should attempt to extend our small recessed front porch. The ground floor is extremely dark. We have to switch lights on during the day to see anything despite having a window there, so it’s tempting to extend in a way that would let more light through. We have glass blocks at the rear of the house already, so I thought we could perhaps extend using them at the front too. I’m not 100% sure I like the look of it, as it’s quite bold.

My main question is perhaps an odd / uneducated one: would we need to hire an architect for this tiny extension (to put in a planning application for us)? Or could this be done without one and, if so, would we need to get an architectural technician to draw up professional / CAD drawings?

    In case it’s any help:

    • Image 1 is a photo of a neighbour’s house, where they seem to have put a glass front to enclose their porch
    • Image 2 is a photo of our existing front elevation
    • Image 3 is an (amateur!) mock-up of what I’m thinking with the glass blocks

Apologies for the long post – any and all thoughts welcome. Thank you

I like the glass blocks with a front door flush with them .. it looks smart… there r a few builds I’ve seen that use old wine bottles… base facing inwards neck or half bottle/cut face/ opening facing outwards … and planted up or stuffed for bug hotels or nests etc!

I think you need building regs. How about crital/crital style, that would look fab

You would need planning permission as it is changing the front elevation visible from the street. In terms of light, I’d say the glass would let more light in than the glass bricks. But the bricks would offer more privacy to the lobby area.

To maximise light I would also get rid of the small bits of brick wall between the lobby and the inside, and replace with all glass.
