  • Chimney pot needed for log burner and I don’t want scaffolding

Hi there, we’ve just got a wood burner installed and we’re informed we needed a cap on our chimney pot to stop birds getting in. We’ve now been told our chimney pot isn’t easily accessible and we need a scaffold erected to put the top on which will cost a fortune, can anyone think of a work around?

I’ve had a wood burner for years and years – and I’ve never had/been told I need a cap to keep birds out! From personal experience, birds don’t tend to go in in winter when it’s on, and we always get it swept in late summer to make sure it’s clear – but never had birds in there! If it was mine I would live with it a few years and see if you actually need one.

I have 2 wood burners fitted and both have caps. Definitely needed, we find the birds do actually sit on the top of the flue, presumably to warm their feet!! I belong to a couple of wood burner groups & people have posted showing the birds that have come down the flue & it’s a real pain getting them out! The scaffolding will be a H&S issues, can a cherry picker not be used instead? It’ll be heaps cheaper.

Jackdaws like building nests in open chimneys. It’s basically a huge pile of twigs blocking your chimney and possibly involving a baby jackdaw landing in your stove and making a horrible screaming noise as they call for their mum. I wouldn’t risk it, happened to my neighbour. When we put bird guards on our chimneys the chimney sweep did it from long ladders.

We had seagull chicks fall down three years in a row before we had the log burner and cap installed. Best do it.
