    Hi all, couple of questions,

    1. We need our chimney repointing. One company has quoted with scaffolding and one hasn’t. Should scaffolding be used? Also, is £500 for scaffolding (just a tower) what others have paid?

    2. I have been quoted £1,109

To bond and skim one entire room, replace the ceiling plasterboard where needed (1/4 of the ceiling) and skim. Does that sound about right?

    Thanks in advance

Rip off for the tower, look up a local tool hire company they will rent it to you something like £50 a day ball park probably less. £500 would buy you a new tower!!!

From what I’ve heard the second price sounds about right

I’ve just had a quote from a plasterer. My room is 8ft x 14. The top half of the wall needs stripping back and around the window. The ceiling boards need screwing tighter and skimming. And reskim the whole room. I did say as a cash job and he’s come in at £880. 2 guys 2 days Inc. Materials. I’m in NELincs. So I would suggest thats probably a good price. But check out his plastering skills 1st!!

Scaffholding very much depends on where/how high/shape of your chimney. If in any doubt, get it. It’s a bit expensive, I’d expect £400 ish. Re the plastering, if that’s traditional two-coat on a back-to-brick room, I’d say that’s a really good price! Make sure they use the right plaster for the age of your house, it might need lime.

If that’s a price for lime plastering (which you should have if you have solid walls/original lime plaster, rather than gypsum) then it’s suspiciously low.

And yes, I’d go for scaffolding as I’d think it would allow them to work more comfortably (and diligently) and, more importantly, it would mean I can go up there and check that they’ve done it right!

We are paying a fortune for our chimney. Wish we knocked it down now!

Scaffolding very much depends on, the location and accessibility of your chimney.
