Where’s the best place to find out specifics of building regs for plumbing?

As part of our loft conversion the plumber put the soil stack right up the middle of our wall. I’m aware he’s done a very neat job but I think it still doesn’t look good on what I feel is a beautiful character feature of our period property the builders are reluctant to change it and come up with reasons why every alternative we suggest isn’t possible. We had another plumber come look to advise us, he suggested a durgo tucked up under the roof line at an angle above the toilet exit pipe. But the plumber from the loft conversion company says it can’t be angled. So now we’re stuck in the middle being told two different things. I figure we need to find out what the rules are for ourselves before trying to have further conversations.

Photo shows where it currently is and the blue and red lines are where the advising plumber suggested it could be changed to hide it a bit better. Any advice would be much appreciated

That looks like the soil vent to me and so I think you can vent the soil stack via the red line shown instead. Building regs will require a vented soil pipe to stop smells coming back into bathroom. Was not aware you could not bend the vent pipe ? If not, can you vent directly up through roof tile or is that too close to window ?

This is always for me the trickiest parts really knowing how to interpret building regulations and ensure aesthetic on a period heritage property such as this. The soil stack is always one of the ugliest external features I find on a building and it’s true you cannot angle and I am hesitant with the suggestion marked. My advice would be to reach out to building control, one of the reasons I prefer Private building control is they are focused on finding solutions for you rather than just signing things off. I think rather than try to understand building regs yourself, contact buidling regs and ask them exactly the options and see what they say. Their response will ensure the least risk for you as what they say goes when it comes to what they will sign off and then none of them can argue with it. Hope that helps?

thank you, yes, that’s really helpful. The loft company use a private building control firm so I will see about contacting them.

It’s frustrating, we’ve been trying to talk to the company doing the loft since the day the soil stack was installed but they ignore us, now suddenly the plumber is coming tomorrow afternoon but with no actual plan. Hopefully if I can get hold of the building control company they might be able to give some suggestions.
