    Walk in showers and tiling!

Our new shower will fill one end of our new ensuite. Its due to be 800mm wide by 1600mm long. Im planning a shower screen at one end with a gap to walk through rather than a door. Im planning to do the tiling myself, (I’ve done a fair amount before and feel this is an area I can save some cost to spend on nicer tiles!) I had planned to fully tile the wall the shower sits on and the wall to the side but leave the end wall with just paint. I’ve added a picture of the plan but the shower is shown the wrong way round and it will be the full width of the room.

Talking to the builder yesterday and mentioned the pocket door we were expecting on the ensuite (we’d talked to the company owner about it previously but not the foreman who’s on site) and he said, oh no you can’t have that it will wobble the wall and your tiles will fall off.

When I said I wasn’t planning to tile the end wall opposite the shower he said I have to or it will get too damp. So now I’m worrying, especially about my tile budget! Obviously if I’m the one tiling I can choose but I don’t want to risk ruining the wall.

I didn’t think there would be that much splash from a 1600mm shower?!

I have a similar set up – the wall at the far end of the shower definitely gets some splashing, particularly at lower level.

It’s not just spray but splashed from the person moving. It’s essential to waterproof and personally I wouldn’t paint, no matter how good the paint is.
